Mr @BillyDaMota, #Casting #Director talks to @ActingUpRadio – Pay-for-Play Auditions for Actors, PAYOLA?

Billy DaMota, Casting Director, Director, Writer, talks to ActingUpRadio.com radio about the recent article in Hollywood Reporter: “New Hollywood Economy: Pay-for-Play Auditions for Actors Gain Dominance.”

This 33 minute interview was done via Skype and without interruptions.

Check out this amazing interview with Billy DaMota and his take on how Hollywood WAS and how it is now, and how actors can change this landscape.

Coming Soon: Billy Damota’s new book:

“Why do you care?” or “Why make such a big deal?” Yes, I could stay silent or uninvolved. Even taking the position that I could never personally engage in the racket that I am about to talk about here, why should I care what other people decide to do, even if it is illegal, unethical, or unprofessional?

The answer is because I believe that as a casting director, the payola scheme in Hollywood directly affects me – and not in a positive way.

Screen Shot 2016-04-03 at 3.43.52 PMI love my profession, I love the art that so many of my colleagues create with their talent, I love the actors without whom I would not have a career or a livelihood, and I personally believe that casting directors and actors deserve much more credit than they receive from their peers.

I think that casting directors are being hoodwinked. They are being led down a path of ethical and professional doom by an insidious and unscrupulous swindle which has learned how to manipulate both the casting and acting communities for its own gain. In all of this, everyone suffers. Actors, who work so hard to get on the radar of those who can hire them are now paying a hefty sum to pass through the pay-for-access toll booth. Misguided casting directors and their staffs are being exploited in an ugly and greedy undertaking that is pushing our profession further down the road of ethical failure and even further away from recognition by the entertainment industry for our legendary accomplishments as casting directors. When casting remains the only main title profession not recognized by the Academy for an Oscar®, do we need to create more obstacles?

I am writing the book as a wake-up call to the industry as a whole. I want people to see how damaged the current state of our profession has become with the sincere hope that we can make the changes that will put us all back on the right track.

When it comes to actors and booking commercials not many can compare to Jeff’s diverse background. As both a former agent and current casting director for over a decade he has met, discussed and researched what many of the most recognizable actors do that consistently book commercials.  He has worked in both NY and LA and knows the differences from the coasts from first hand experience.

In Los Angeles his agent days at LA Talent is where he utilized his skills to not only represent actors, but also helping top models as well, to develop themselves into the acting profession.

Then he moved on to Cunningham, Escott, & Dipene, (CED now known as CESD) known as one of the most prestigious commercial agencies in the country. There he worked with many of the top talent and celebrities in the business. Responsible for handling many of the endorsement campaigns, celebrity contracts and high-end negotiations. Some of the talent here ranged from celebrities in world of television, film, music and sports.

After that Jeff left the agent world behind and started his own independent casting company. While continuing to cast commercials, he also casts feature films and television series. He has also began to transcend into producing and packaging. To this point, Jeff has helped produced four films and is currently developing two television pilots.

Wendy McPhail, CNC, FDN, NBCCT – Health Bytes !

CNC – Certified Nutritional Consultant. I provide education in nutrition for the individual seeking to regain their health as well as group seminars for parents and their children on health issues. Proper nutrition in the school age years can reinforce lifelong eating habits that contribute to a student’s overall well being. This will help them to grow and learn to their fullest potential, and then go on to lead a long, healthy life. I provide an introduction to the human body and to factors that prevent illness and promote or damage health.
Did you know that this generation of young people is the first that is forecast to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents? 1 in 3 or 4 children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes at some point in their lifetime. The prevalence of overweight children among 6-11 year olds has doubled in the past 20 years and tripled for teens.

Adopting healthy behavior can have lifelong consequences. The goal of this education is not only to increase the parent’s health knowledge, but to create healthy behavior in the children of those parents. Health Education is most effective if parents are involved.

FDN – Functional Diagnostic Nutrition. Certification to utilize lab testing through Biohealth Diagnostics. FDN does not diagnose or treat specific diseases. Instead it explores the underlying causes of health challenges. Because symptoms are the last thing to be revealed in a disease process, usually function has been lost for some time. Symptoms are physical manifestations of a problem far deeper than most doctors are willing to look for. Like the tip of an iceberg, symptoms are a signal that there is dysfunction lying beneath the surface. When treatment is pills or surgeries to eradicate symptoms, the root cause is never discovered and dealt with. Health concerns can be managed and resolved with functional lab testing and integrative approaches to treatment.

NBCCT – Nationally Board Certified Colon Therapist through I-ACT (International Association for Colon Therapy). Colon Therapy is a wonderful adjunct to any health improvement plan, and is an excellent therapy for those in chronic states of ill health.

FIND YOUR VOICE – SING YOUR SONG! @CoachClayBanks

FIND YOUR VOICE – SING YOUR SONG!

By Clay Banks

Pi7-Sa62_400x400

Clay Banks @CoachClayBanks Professional Performance Coach Specializing in On-Camera Work Los Angeles. ClayBanksStudio.com

It’s all about CREATIVITY!

Seeing as this is my first article with you all, let me introduce myself. My name is Clay Banks, although most all of my students eventually just call me Coach. I’m a veteran Master Coach in the Los Angles area where I own and head up a powerful on-camera Film & TV acting studio called Clay Banks Productions & Studio International — or, more affectionately, CBSI.

Amidst all of the training that takes place at CBSI, we consistently place a strong emphasis on tapping into, becoming, and staying CREATIVE.

If you spend any time at all around CBSI, it won’t take long before you hear the phrase, “Survivalist vs. Creative Genius”. Our SURVIVALIST (functioning self) and our CREATIVE (inner artistic genius). They are distinctively different and our brains respond accordingly.

At any point in time people are divided into two separate parts that, more often than not, aren’t equal.  As mentioned, those two parts are The Creative Artist Self and The Survivalist Self.  There is a dual nature in most individuals that must be managed, and knowledge of this duality is crucial in making forward progress.

  1. Who is the Survivalist?

The Survivalist is the functional part of you. This it the you who thinks through life, navigating life’s situations for survival. The Survivalist part of you handles the maintenance of personal finances, your job, your personal relationships, keeping order, and things of that sort. This is the part of you that makes life work and allows you to survive. The average person mostly functions as a survivalist and is simply a consumer looking to create and sustain a comfortable lifestyle. But that’s not you! The difference is, as an artist, you have an inner creative genius that’s craving to come out. Or, is already out and needing to…well, create! The Survivalist stifles The Creative.

  1.   Who is the Creative Artist?

The Creative Artist is the artistic part of you. It’s your passionate and creative self…the person who wants to create/produce/act. It’s that part of you who has you reading this article right now. This part of you wants to take territory away from the Survivalist…and your Survivalist isn’t all that crazy about losing this territory. Because of this, there’s a continuous battle between the Creative Artist and the Survivalist…and you are the one who has to fight that fight.

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 11.58.04 PM

Just like many other things in life, if we don’t fight, we lose. If we don’t use it, we’ll eventually lose it…whatever it is. The creative mind is no different — it must be subdued. And once that happens, it needs to be exercised…often!

Now, simply pulling information or knowledge from your mind that’s been previously stored up there isn’t necessarily going to assist in your creative development. It’s not about pulling from the past. It’s about creating in the present… and not being fearful to try new things. And often! When you venture off from the familiar and discover new dimensions of yourself, CREATIVE GROWTH is more often than not the amazing byproduct. So, try this.

ACTION TASKS:

  • SLOW DOWN, OR IN SOME CASES, SPEED UP. JUST CHANGE OUT OF YOUR NORMAL (When done correctly, this shouldn’t feel comfortable. After all, that’s the point.)
  • VENTURE OUTSIDE OF YOUR PROVERBIAL MEANING — TRY DIFFERENT THINGS…DIFFERENTLY. (Just do it!)
  • GET PAST YOUR FEAR OR INSECURITY–OR EVEN SAFETY FOR THAT MATTER–AND STEP OUT INTO UNKNOWN WATERS. (Without placing yourself in harm’s way, just go! Without having to think and plan everything out. Be spontaneous.)
  • ONCE YOU’VE CLICKED INTO SOMETHING THAT GETS YOUR ATTENTION, CONTINUE TO DRIVE YOUR CREATIVITY EVEN FURTHER. PUSH IT, TWIST IT, TURN IT DOWNSIDE UP AND OUTSIDE IN. (Push through the status quo and don’t be concerned with how you look. You’re an artist… it’s your job to look different.)
  • DO YOUR BEST TO KEEP: THE LOGICAL – THE EDITOR – THE CRITIC – THE ADULT, ANY OF THE LIKE…OUT OF YOUR WAY! (Do things!)

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 11.57.49 PMTake chances. ** Be brave. ** Don’t analyze. ** Press in and Press on. And, once you find something interesting and creative — keep challenging yourself to take it in new directions. After you’ve spent some time doing this, you’ll eventually become so familiar with the unfamiliar — so comfortable with the uncomfortable — so safe with the unsafe — that people (as well as yourself) just won’t be able to not find you fascinatingly interesting. If you continue to persevere…and if you’re fortunate — they just may pay you for it. They just may pay you lots and lots and lots!

THE ARTISTS FREEWAY – [Your FREE Weekly Creative Exercise]

  • Take some time that’s been specifically scheduled for your CREATIVE ARTIST. (Plan a few artist dates.) Don’t let anything get in the way of this time.
  • Because of the endless avenues of creative pathways one can travel, narrow in on something you feel you’d like to pursue. E.g. PAINTING — WRITING — SINGING — PLAYING MUSIC — SCENES/MONOLOGUES CHARACTERS — COMEDY — FOOD — DANCE — AVANT-GARDE — ETC.
  • Jump in and let the fun begin! (Remember, don’t edit or judge yourself.)
  • Once you’ve explored around and pushed yourself beyond yourself, HERE COMES YOUR ACTION TASK…grab a piece of what you’ve been playing with and see about shaping a part of that into a (roughly 5 minute) presentation.
  • At this juncture I would ask my students to bring whatever they need to make it all happen into the studio with them and take the stage and show us what they’ve got! In the case of any of you reading this right, now, take it and shoot it with your video camera or phone. Then watch what you’ve done…and you’ll see the power in simply doing something!

Screen Shot 2016-02-01 at 11.57.55 PM

Remember, this isn’t necessarily as much about a beautiful execution as it is about the creative, organic nature of the experience. So, don’t try and over-rehearse. Just do it! And, if you find you’ve done something similar a few times, seek out ways to do it different each time. This keeps everything nice and fresh! The way an actor is required to be.

Again, if you’re not presently in a studio that will embrace such radically creative behavior, just do it for the sake of doing it. However, if you’re a junky for performing, simply show it to your friends. Or, come on in and sign up for some classes here at CBSI… you’ll have a blast growing in your gifts! We make sure of it!

KEEP CREATING!
